William Shakespeare's King Henry IV Part 1, Act 3 Scene I.
Owen Glendower - I can call spirits from the vasty deep.
Hotspur - Why, so can I, or so can any man; But will they come when you do call for them?
A bereaved father, having lost his son a year ago in World War II, seeks a way to bring him back. The father has nothing now; his son was all he had left to live for after his wife died many years ago. He turns to a woman he knows who has experience with the supernatural, with the occult. He asks her if there's a way to bring his son back. She tells him there's a way to do anything.
The method for bringing the son (John) back to his father involves danger. The woman doesn't go into detail, but she says the father could bring about his own destruction if he tries it. Nevertheless, desperate and believing he has nothing to lose, he proceeds. He calls his son's spirit back to him. The consequences are unlike anything he had imagined...
I'm not happy about this, father. You should have left me where I was.
John
